Following the first one held last year, the CBRT organized the second Regional Central Banking Seminar on Communication on 14-15 September 2018 in Istanbul with the title “Why Should Central Banks Care about Economic Education?”

The seminar hosted 41 participants from the central banks of Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada, Croatia, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine and the European Central Bank as well as the Institute for Economic Education (INEV). The event was closed to the press and comprised presentations by officials from participating countries on economic education practices. There were also opportunities to share experiences. Thierry Bracke from the European Central Bank, Nicolas Galetti from the Bank of Canada, Marek Petrus from the INEV and Giovanni Iuzzolino from the Bank of Italy delivered speeches at the seminar, which also included five panels. The importance that participating central banks attach to economic education, the use of plain language in communication, and the methods and instruments employed to reach wider audiences were discussed.

It was emphasized at the seminar that increasing economic literacy contributes to raising awareness of and confidence in central banks. The importance of using plain and understandable language was underlined as well.

In the closing session, the participants took part in an interactive survey.
