| Characteristics of 5 New Turkish Lira Counterfeit Notes |
|
The original banknote paper is made of 100 % cotton fibre, and does not fluoresce under UV light. Whereas, counterfeit banknote paper fluoresces under UV light. However, it has been established that some counterfeit notes also do not fluoresce under UV light.
The original banknote incorporates watermarks reproducing Atatürk's portrait and the value numeral ''5'', which can be seen in the white area when the note is held up against the light from either the front or the back. Counterfeit notes do not contain watermarks, or these are attempted to be imitated by the printing.
Fine fibres have been incorporated into the original banknote paper, which are invisible to the naked eye but fluoresce in red and blue under UV light. But, counterfeit notes do not contain fine fibres, or these are attempted to be imitated by the printing.
The back of the original banknote contains a windowed security thread, which comprises silvery dashes bearing the letters ''TCMB'', and forms a continuous line when held up against the light. On counterfeit notes, it is seen that the security thread has been attempted to be imitated by the printing method or by sticking security threads, which have been cut off the original banknotes, to the counterfeit ones.
The front of the original banknote contains a triangle motif on the top right edge, which is printed with special ink that shifts color from gold to green when tilted. However, no color change is observed on counterfeit notes since the optically variable ink is attempted to be imitated by the printing method using nail polish or imitation silvery material.
The original banknote contains motifs on the front, which are printed with ink with a fluorescent effect that fluoresces in yellow under UV light. On some counterfeit notes, it is seen that the motifs have been attempted to be imitated so as to fluoresce.
A special printing technique has been applied to Atatürk's portrait as well as to the map of Turkey, the Turkish Independence War medal, and some text and numeral blocks on the front of the original banknote, which creates an embossed effect, that can be felt with the fingertips. Counterfeit notes do not contain intaglio printing.
The original banknote contains a concealed image within the depiction of the map of Turkey on the top left edge on the front, comprising the Crescent-and-Star motif that can be seen when the note is viewed horizontally, breadthwise or lengthwise, at eye level. However, counterfeit notes do not contain a latent image.
Micro lettering has been applied by the intaglio printing technique at the bottom edge on the front of the original banknote, comprising the letters "TCMB" which can be seen with a magnifying glass. But, counterfeit notes do not contain micro lettering.
The original banknote contains a motif in the middle left edge, part of which is printed on the front side and the other on the reverse, and these parts combine in precise register to form a pentagon motif when the note is held up against the light. On counterfeit notes, the pentagon motif is out of register and distorted.
Two serial and sequence numbers have been applied on the back of the original banknote, which have been printed in black and red and which fluoresce in red and green under UV light. On some counterfeit notes, the serial and sequence numbers are observed to have been imitated so as to fluoresce in red.
